Robin has a lot of hobbies - although doesn't get much time to engage in them these days.
Flying -
I
used to feel cheeky calling this a hobby as I didn't get the chance to
do it much! However in August 2007 the flying lessons began.
Flying over Canada is fun! Once I get my license I look forward
to exploring more of this wonderful country, and to taking my friends
& family up when they come to visit.
Virtual Aviation
-
The cheap way to fly is to use a Flight Simulator. I have been using
Microsoft Flight Sim 2004 for the last few years. This has been
supplemented by many add-ons (mostly freeware) obtained mainly from
Flightsim.com. Throw in the online ATC environment VATSIM,
along with real world weather updates every 15 minutes, a heavy jet,
some SID & STAR charts, a fully programmable FMC, and you have a
recipe for a highly realistic online flight-simming experience.
Radio
- I've been into scanning the radio waves since I was 11. That is when
I bought my first scanner. Since then I have listened in to many
broadcasts, especially Aircraft and Air Traffic Control. A couple of
years ago I sat an Amateur Radio exam, and am now a licenced operator
in the UK. I will need to take a test in Canada to gain a licence
there, and hope to do that within a year of arriving.
Computing
- I first started programming a few days after getting my first
computer as a boy! It all began on old machines like this Commodore Vic
20. I have enjoyed "playing" computers ever since. I currently pass
time experimenting with new Internet-based technologies such as Voice
over IP.
Bargain hunting - I try never
to pay the full price for anything! I enjoy researching product pricing
before I make a purchase, and often astound people by the way I make
deals work to my advantage. For example I make calls between Canada and
the UK (and vice versa) entirely free of charge.
